Israel Flores Ortiz, 18, has been found guilty on several counts after being accused of acting inappropriately toward several high school girls in Fairfax County, Virginia. The case has gotten a lot of attention because the claims are so serious and there is a lot of political debate about how it was handled.
After a full day of court, Flores Ortiz was found guilty of nine misdemeanor counts of assault and battery, according to reports. About a dozen victims came forward during the trial and told their stories. The judge also found him not guilty on three other charges, and one charge was dropped.
Local news outlets, such as WUSA9 and WJLA, reported on the case. Flores Ortiz was originally charged with 13 counts of inappropriately touching female classmates at a school in Fairfax County.
The Case and Arrest in Detail
Police say they first learned about the situation on March 5, when officials at Fairfax High School told them about several assaults that had happened on campus. Flores Ortiz turned himself in just two days later, on March 7, after a warrant for his arrest was issued.
Officials say that Flores Ortiz came to the United States illegally from El Salvador in 2024. He was in 11th grade when the events happened.
His sentencing is set for April 21. After the court process is over, immigration officials may do more about him.
During the hearing, officials from U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement said they would be ready to arrest him and send him back to his home country if he was let go.
Political Debate and Criticism
The case has also sparked political debate, especially with Steve Descano, the Commonwealth’s Attorney for Fairfax County. Some people said he didn’t handle the case well.
Sean Kennedy, the president of Virginians for Safe Communities, had a lot of bad things to say about Descano’s office. He said that the prosecution was weak and poorly run. “DESCANO DOES IT AGAIN(,) The case of the illegal alien groping at Fairfax High School fell apart TODAY because FFX Soros DA Steve Descano only called victims and witnesses yesterday!” Kennedy wrote on X on Thursday. “This is NOT incompetence; it’s on purpose.”
Kennedy went on to say, “First, Descano charged the illegal alien groper with simple assault and battery instead of sexual battery, which would have meant registering as a sex offender or the more serious charge of aggravated sexual battery, which carries a 20-year prison sentence.” “Then, Descano tried to get the judge to let the offender out on bail, which the judge correctly turned down. Next, prosecutors sent out subpoenas to the witness and victims just the day before, which put the whole case in danger.
He also said, “The girls came in large numbers and made Descano try the case.”
Kennedy went on, “Disgustingly, Descano’s chief deputy downplayed Flores Ortiz’s sexual assaults as ‘grabbing butts’ in her opening statement, which was supposed to be in support of victims after she tried to keep the media from covering the case.” “This win is all thanks to the brave and determined victims who got a little bit of justice.”
“Fortunately,” he said in the end, “ICE will give Flores Ortiz a free ride home to El Salvador, even though he will probably get a short sentence.”
Descano and his office pushed back hard against the accusations. In his own words: “Today, my office went to trial on all 13 assault charges, giving each victim the opportunity to share their experiences with the court. After listening to the testimony and reviewing other evidence, the judge ultimately convicted the defendant of nine of those charges.”
He went on to say he was deeply troubled when he learned about the defendant’s repeated assaults on minors at school — “a place where all children should feel safe.” He also took a moment to acknowledge the victims: “I’d like to extend my appreciation to all the victims for their bravery in sharing their testimony publicly, which is always a daunting task, but was made even more so in the face of the significant attention on this case.”
Laura Birnbaum from his office also said the criticism of Kennedy is not true. She said Kennedy is a person who always tells lies about the cases in Fairfax.
Birnbaum said that all the things people are saying about this case are completely false. She explained that it is a magistrate who decides what charges to bring, not the prosecutors office. She said our office did not decide on the charges and people who say we did not tell the truth do not understand how the law works in Virginia.
She also said that the people who prosecute cases never asked for Flores Ortiz to be released. She said the case was never in danger of being dropped. According to her they sent out papers to make people come to court weeks before the trial. She said they sent some papers closer to the trial date and everyone who got these papers came to court.
Community Reaction and Safety Concerns
The case is making parents in Fairfax County very scared and worried. They are worried about their kids being safe at school.
One parent, Stacy Langton said she is very scared. She said when she sends her daughters to school she thinks they are safe.
She also said that in this case the kids were not safe all. She said no parent would not be very upset to think that their daughters could be hurt in a way while they are at school.
At the time the federal authorities said that Flores Ortiz might be sent back to his country after he is sentenced. The immigration people said they have already started the process to deport him.
This case is also making people over the country talk about Fairfax County and how they handle crimes by people who are in the country illegally. It is adding to the talks, about law enforcement. Keeping people safe. The case of Flores Ortiz is bringing attention to Fairfax County. The way they handle these kinds of cases.
